‘Keeping them in their place’ is a feature-length experimental film consisting of individual chapters. As a collaborative project, the film premiered with orchestral accompaniment at the opening ceremony on 5th May 2017 within the framework of the music festival ‘CRESCENDO’ at the UDK concert hall in Hardenbergstrasse. In this first of three films, the orchestra plays Lorin Maazel’s version of ‘The Ring Without Words’, which is an abridged summary of the musical highlights of Richard Wagner’s ‘The Ring of the Nibelung’. The film tackles racist aspects of Richard Wagner’s tetralogy, then translates them into the current and futuristic context of sexuality, racism and genetics to critically question future-oriented tendencies and connections to gender and femininity.
